| Nja, här tycker jag att man får dela på frågan. Självklart måste påven anse att kyrkans tro är bättre och mer korrekt än t.ex. indianreligionerna eller andra trosinriktningar. Hur skulle han annars kunna vara påve och följa kristi uppmaning till lärjungarna om att göra alla folk till lärjungar och att lära dem att hålla allt vad han har befallt dem, om han själv trodde att det fanns någon annan religion som i själva verket var bättre ?
Däremot är det en annan sak att han inte rimligtvis bör kunna försvara de metoder som användes av konkvistadorerna. Kristi uppmaning var ju att lära folk om tron och få dem att följa den, inte att slå ihjäl de som hade en annan uppfattning. Nu får man nog vara lite ödmjuk och säga att det som verkar självklart för oss kanske sågs med andra ögon i folks tankar vid den tiden som detta inträffade. Men självfallet kan våldsanvändning för att sprida evangeliet aldrig accepteras. Då hamnar ju kyrkan lika snett som de extrema muslimska grupper som tror att det är deras guds vilja att de skall försöka sprida sin tro med terroristattentat och självmordsbombningar. Inte heller kan det accepteras att kyrkan passivt stöder att den politiska makten använder våld som motiveras utifrån religiösa grunder. Att vara påve i dagens internationella kyrka förutsätter nog åtskilligt av diplomatisk förmåga och att varje uttalande övervägs mycket noga. Det har ju varit några uttalanden som blivit mycket ifrågasatta och framtiden får väl utvisa om detta är något som går igen eller inte. |

Kanske det. Men allvarligare är väl hur människor i slutna grupper kan odla en egen verklighetsuppfattning som närmast automatiskt stänger ute obehagliga fakta. Man kan till exempel jämföra med hur renläriga kommunister förmår bortse från de oerhörda brott mot mänskligheten som varje försök att omsätta marxismen-leninismen i verklighet lett till. In a speech to Latin American and Caribbean bishops at the end of a visit to Brazil, the Pope said the Church had not imposed itself on the indigenous peoples of the Americas. They had welcomed the arrival of European priests at the time of the conquest as they were "silently longing" for Christianity, he said. Millions of tribal Indians are believed to have died as a result of European colonization backed by the Church since Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492, through slaughter, disease or enslavement. Many Indians today struggle for survival, stripped of their traditional ways of life and excluded from society. "It's arrogant and disrespectful to consider our cultural heritage secondary to theirs," said Jecinaldo Satere Mawe, chief coordinator of the Amazon Indian group Coiab. Several Indian groups sent a letter to the Pope last week asking for his support in defending their ancestral lands and culture. They said the Indians had suffered a "process of genocide" since the first European colonizers had arrived. Priests blessed conquistadors as they waged war on the indigenous peoples, although some later defended them and many today are the most vociferous allies of Indians. "The state used the Church to do the dirty work in colonizing the Indians but they already asked forgiveness for that ... so is the Pope taking back the Church's word?" said Dionito Jose de Souza a leader of the Makuxi tribe in northern Roraima state. Pope John Paul spoke in 1992 of mistakes in the evangelization of native peoples of the Americas. Pope Benedict not only upset many Indians but also Catholic priests who have joined their struggle, said Sandro Tuxa, who heads the movement of northeastern tribes.
