Irlands mest kända ekumeniska konferens, The Glenstal Ecumenical Conference, firar 50-årsjubileum i år. Organisatörerna, bland dem en benediktinabbot, ansökte om tillstånd att få göra detta genom att fira en gemensam eukaristi. Det har gått bra tidigare. Men den här gången sa den lokale biskopen, stödd av nuntien, nej med motiveringen att det inte står i hans makt att ge ett sådant tillstånd.
Arrangörerna tar därför ett års paus för att tänka över hur man skall hantera situationen.
Abbot Hederman förklarar sin oro i NCR: ”The great danger is that by continuing to meet as we do, without kicking up too much of a fuss, that we provide an alibi for the institutional churches of this country and an excuse for not moving forward ecumenically. It is sufficient for the various authorities to throw some money at us and then to say that Glenstal is looking after our ecumenical obligations.
”Well, the truth is that it is not; and, indeed, the question needs to be asked as to whether the Roman Catholic church is really serious about church unity.”
