LCWR årsmöte bestämt sig för fortsatt dialog men inte kompromissa om sin kallelse och sitt uppdrag .
Enligt ett pressmeddelande av syster Pat Farell kommer LCWR styrelse att samtala med ärkebiskop Sartain under 2 timmar på söndag för att påbörja dialogprocessen och se hur den utvecklar sig.
”LCWR förväntar sig en öppen och ärlig dialog med Sartain som förhoppningsvis kan leda till inte bara ökad förståelse mellan kyrkans ledarskap och ordenssystrarna utan också till att skapa fler möjligheter för lekfolk och särskilt kvinnor att komma till tals. ”
”At the ceremony, Farrell will move to the position of past president, while Franciscan Sr. Florence Deacon, currently LCWR’s president-elect, will become its president.
Asked if that change in leadership would affect their dialogue with Sartain, Farrell said the process of having three sisters working together in leadership allows for “continuity.””

systrarna visar beundransvärt tålamod, men också klokskap. Vi får se om det lyckas dem att på en och samma gång stå fast utan att ge Rom en förevändning att upphäva LCWR:s kanoniska status.

I december 1967 bjöd Thomas Merton in amerikanska ordenssystrar till Abbey of Gethsemani för en serie konferenser om kontemplativt liv och läroämbete i ljuset av andra Vatikankonciliet. Konferenserna spelades in, transkriberades och publicerades i ”The Springs of Contemplation”. Mertons goda råd till systrarna låter lika aktuella idag:
“I think they have to be encouraged to go ahead and make judgments. They need to be put in situations where they have to. The old system, of course, did not provide for this. It was fixed so that an individual never had to make judgments but would just sit in line and ask the superior, ‘May I have a toothbrush?’ This is absurd. We built things this way and called it the Cross or obedience. This may have been all right if you were living in Austria in 1772 under an absolute emperor, and all you had to do was to keep the institution going, because it had been endowed. But we’re not doing that anymore.
Obviously, the spirit of the Council is that we’re supposed to experiment, take risks, change and develop. This has the stamp of the Holy Spirit on it. Just as obviously, there are people on top who are scared, who want to stop it. They take second place right now. A prudential Christian decision now is in favor of courageously following what the Council clearly wants, and the Council clearly wants development. People who do not want development have to prove their point very hard before one can follow them in conscience. If everybody obeyed all the curial officials in everything in every moment, there would be no progress possible. There would be no point in having had a Council, no point in John XXIII having been Pope.
We don’t act rebelliously or out of contempt, but just quietly go along with what the Council wants. This is not a game of beating the Curia or the authorities. We have to be clear on that. We’re not trying to get points for our side. We just want to do what God wants.” (The Springs of Contemplation (1992), s 38-41)

Även den som storsint till Gud säger ”Ske din vilja” och därigenom tror sig bli styrd av Gud och tror sig veta vad Gud vill kan bedra sig.
Men vi har trots detta alla en benägenhet att ty oss till dem som tolkar Guds vilja som man själv.
Därför tyr jag mig gärna bla till Thomas Merton.
