”Officials say Israel does not view document as recognition of Palestine by the Holy See, but add Jerusalem is ’disappointed’ and awaits clarifications.”

he Vatican has referred to the “State of Palestine” in its diplomatic communiqués since November 2012, when the United Nations voted to recognize Palestine as a “non-member observer state.” When the recently concluded negotiations began in 2013, that statement also said they would take place with representatives of the “State of Palestine.”
Wednesday’s statement does not, therefore, amount to a new diplomatic recognition of Palestinian statehood.

The “news” reported Wednesday, therefore, is two and a half years old.
When the Vatican spokesperson, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed to reporters on Wednesday that the language used in the statement is “a recognition that the state exists,” he understood himself to be repeating an already established point.

”The Vatican had welcomed the decision by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012 to recognize a Palestinian state and had referred to the Palestine state since. But the treaty is the first legal document negotiated between the Holy See and the Palestinian state, giving the Vatican’s former signs of recognition an unambiguous confirmation in a formal, bilateral treaty.”
”The treaty was finalized days before Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visits Pope Francis at the Vatican. Abbas is heading to Rome to attend Francis’ canonization Sunday of two new saints from the Holy Land.”
